Dunstan Maculey is named in the top 40 engineers under 40. Mr Maculey who also is the President Elect of the Washington D.C. chapter of ASRAE heads Encon's Mechanical Engineering Division. Dunstan accoplishment have not gone unnoticed in his native Liberia as Mr. Maculey was featured in the national newspaper. Below in an excerpt from that article ...
Liberian Among Top 40 Consulting Engineers in USA
Dunstan Laurence Macauley III, of Monrovia, Liberia, has been named one of the top 40 consulting engineers in the The technical magazine, Consultant. Specified Engineers, named 39-year-old Macauley among 40 consulting engineers in America for 2010, and indicated that each of the 40 is “breaking the mold.” This means that each of them has accomplished something in their field that is particularly outstanding, and unmatched by most American engineers.
Mr. Macauley is Director of Mechanical Engineering at Encon Group, Kensington, Md., a leading engineering firm in the State of Maryland.
Young Macauley, a product of the J.J. Roberts United Methodist Elementary School and the College of West Africa, both in Monrovia, Liberia, took his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, USA.
The magazine described his present position as “one of the most honorable jobs as an engineer, designing an environmentally sealed chamber to protect the American flag, the Star-Spangled Banner exhibit in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.”
Macauley, the magazine said, “came up with a cost-effective system design that would maintain a 65° F temperature with 45% relative humidity within a 50-by-50-ft concrete box.”
The young Liberian engineer also worked on the HVAC systems for a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Walkersville, Md. The facility needed two identical 2,500-sq-ft fill stations within a clean room to produce and grow cell culture media in a controlled environment.
Outside of work, according to the magazine, Macauley has an eye for landscape photography, especially lighthouses and historic places of worship. “I have no problem driving two, three hours just to capture the right scene and turn around and drive back,” he said.
The former college resident assistant (RA) met his wife Florence in middle school, and still enjoys playing basketball even though he can't jump as high as he used to as a 6-ft 3-in. power forward. Macauley frequently volunteers with the “play it forward” attitude, via outreach programs at the local YMCA and by supporting several orphans in Liberia.
Last year he also served as the chair of Region III regional conference of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He is currently the vice president for the national chapter, and will start his term as chapter president in July 2011.
In 2008, Dunstan Macauley joined Encon Group as a Senior Mechanical Engineer where his responsibilities include project management and mechanical system design. He has over 12 years of experience in engineering design and project management. His engineerig experience includes evaluation, design, and specification of mechanical systems in new and renovated commercial, educational, and institutional facilities.
Mr. Macauley has also conducted facilities assessments including programming studies, energy and life cycle cost analyses; and worked on multiple projects that have achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver and gold certification.
Over the years, Mr. Macauley has held positions at design firms in the New York City and Washington D.C. metropolitan areas, including Senior Mechanical Engineer at Bladykas Engineering, P.C, Associate at SmithGroup, and Senior Mechanical Engineer at Vanderweil Engineers.
His experiences include:
Mechanical systems programming requirements for the new 1.5 million cubic feet archival and records storage facility including low temperature and low relative humidity archival storage systems.
Airborne hazard feasibility study to develop protection strategies against airborne Chemical, Biological, Radiological (CBR) threats for the facility's Data Center and Situation Room.
Lead engineer for the complete mechanical system design of a new conservation facility for the USS Monitor, including a new state of the art conservation lab for the restoration of the Monitor's gun turret.
Mr. Macauley is a registered Professional Engineer in the District of Columbia (2004) and New York State (2006); and a LEED Accredited Professional and is certified as a High-Performance Building Design Professional.
His professional affiliations include the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) where he is the Treasurer of the National Capital Chapter. He is also a corresponding member for ASHRAE technical committee 2.8 (Building Environmental Impacts and Sustainability) and the Research Sub-committee chair for ASHRAE technical group 8 (Variable Refrigerant Flow).
Dunstan Laurence Macauley was born in Monrovia, Liberia on October 20, 1970, to the union of Dunstan and Juanita Macauley. His father, Dunstan Macauley, is himself an electrical engineer and former Managing Director of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC).
