4G Manufacturing Expansion
Encon is currently providing a full range of construction management and engineering services for the design and construction of the 4G Manufacturing Facility expansion project. This is a multi-phase project that will significantly expand QIAGEN’s presence at the location. Services provided include facility programming, process development, engineering design and on-site project management. Encon has also been selected as QIAGEN’s Owners Representative and has a daily on-site presence providing oversight and management of the construction and start-up of the project.
The expansion is being designed as cGMP compliant for the manufacture of a wide variety of diagnostic products for distribution throughout QIAGEN’s worldwide customer base. Manufacturing space, laboratories for product scale up, support offices and meeting rooms, a new office building, a new parking garage, and an expanded utility infrastructure are included in the scope of the project.
Fredriksted, St.Croix, USVI
Since 2003 Encon has been providing MEP engineering and construction management services for Level 3's (formally Global Crossing) St. Croix facilities in the US Virgin Islands. The site has two buildings; the first is the South American Crossing (SAC) building, approximately 80,000 square feet; the second is the Mid Atlantic Crossing (MAC) building, approximately 40,000 square feet. Both SAC and MAC are terrestrial cable landing stations for Globing Crossing’s worldwide sub-sea fiber network.
In 2009 Encon provided engineering and construction management services for the replacement of all mechanical systems in the SAC building. The building is located approximately 250 feet from the ocean, a harsh operating environment for exterior mechanical and electrical equipment.
Exterior mechanical equipment life cycles had been reduced to less than 5 years because of the environment and the use of excessively long refrigerant piping runs beyond good engineering design practice and published installation guidelines.
Lonza - Walkersville, MD
Media Manufacturing and Filling Suites
Encon provided project management, construction, conceptual development, detailed design including MEP, construction management, and start-up and commissioning services for Lonza’s new cGMP Media Manufacturing and Filling Suites. To support the new manufacturing space, upgrades to Lonza’s clean and building utilities were necessary. The manufacturing area fit-out and central utilities upgrades were renovations of existing space and careful attention to construction activities were necessary to minimize any disruption to ongoing site operations.
Composed of mirror image Animal Origin and Non Animal Origin suites, the Lonza Media Island contains a total of six media makeup tanks ranging from 750L to 10,000L. Batched media can be transferred via piping to an adjacent Grade A fill space to perform fill operations. All tanks are interconnected using transfer panels enabling fill operations from any of the tanks directly into their respective fill suites. Tank and line cleaning is performed with segregated CIP skids. A new Part 11 compliant process control system was installed to control all media manufacturing, transfer, and CIP operations. Pass through autoclaves were provided for sterilization of hard goods and fill components. Segregated HVAC is accomplished with two separate air handlers and ensures all manufacturing and fill spaces are in compliance with FDA and EU regulatory requirements for air changes, room pressurizations, and contamination control.
